Plein Air Magazine, a monthly periodical of Plein Air Landscape paintings and Traditional Fine Art, regularly features a multi-page section called "En Couleur," which chronicles scheduled national and international Plein Air Painting Competitions. This month's article featured two plein air competitions and exhibitions held in Oregon. "Observing Oregon" was sponsored by the Yoshida Gallery of Portland, OR and The Caswell Gallery in Troutdale, OR sponsored “2005 Paint the Gorge." A single photo and paragraph from each event documents these 2 competitions on pages 32 and 33 of this issue.

The Caswell Gallery’s submitted photograph was taken of Anna Lancaster plein air painting at the Women's Forum Observatory overlooking Crown Point and the Vista House. It was taken by Bud Fields, an artist and the President of the North West Oil Painters Guild. The curators of the Caswell Gallery chose this photo for the Plein Air Magazine submission and future “Paint the Gorge” publicity because of the nice composition of the Columbia River Gorge landscape with an artist at work. It was picked from 90+ photos taken by Bud Fields of the 47 artist participants in the competition. For Anna Lancaster, this was truly a right place at the right time special gift from God. It happened just when the artist was thinking to herself, “What am I doing? What’s my name? Why am I doing this? Can I stand another moment of artist specific rejection?" Her response was, "Thank-you, God, for this hug from heaven.”

Canby Rodeo Court Receives Portraits

On February 11th, 2006, Clackamas County Fair Grounds celebrated their annual Rodeo Court Coronation as the title of 2006 Ambassador Queen passed from the 2005 Ambassador Queen Kirsten De Groen to Ambassador Princess Terri Rush. The 2005 Ambassador Princess Terri Rush passed her title to the New 2006 Ambassador Princess Jackie Gibson.

This year, at the end of the celebration an added special gift was provided for the 2005 Ambassador Queen Kirsten De Groen and 2006 Ambassador Queen Terri Rush by the Clackamas County Fair Ground Rodeo Committee. Anna Lancaster, professional portrait and equine artist, donated oil on linen portraits of the lovely Kirsten and Terri along with their majestic horses, Big and Stinger. The duos were painted during their 2005 reign.

Mrs. Lancaster is a personal friend of Clackamas County Fair Grounds Event Coordinator Susan Rudberg and Clackamas County employee Lori Bothwell. Anna met them while participating in several of the bi-annual art and craft bazaars held at the fair grounds. She has also participated in several of the Canby Art and Wine Festivals which Susan Rudberg coordinates. It was at the 2005 Canby Art and Wine Festival that Susan had the idea to commission the portraits after viewing some of Anna’s paintings. “It was so funny when Susan got me the opportunity to photograph Kirsten and Terri for the portraits,” laughed Anna. “Susan wanted it to be a surprise for the girls so she told them that she was helping me to learn how to do some promotional photography work for the fair grounds. It was kind of a half truth because giving the portraits to the girls promotes the appreciation that the Rodeo Committee has for the Ambassadors and their contributions to Canby’s sense of community. I had just finished taking what I thought would be a good shot of Kirsten and Big and said, ‘I think that will be a nice one.’ Susan, who was observing, had noticed that Big’s ears were back. She blurted, ‘Anna, you have to make sure that you paint Big’s ears forward. When a horse’s ears are back that means they are not happy or relaxed.’ Susan and I looked at each other with that ‘Ooops!’ look on our faces and Kirsten and Terri looked at us with an ‘Ah Hah! Something’s up!’ expressions on their faces. We all started laughing. I think the girls had the surprise figured out before I even got started.”

Anna and Susan Rudberg have been kicking around the idea of Anna becoming the official Rodeo Court Painter. “Now that the cat’s out of the bag, it would be nice to proceed with the commissions in a more formal portraiture process where I would have the opportunity to do some live sittings with the Queen and Princess in order to produce portraits that the girls and their families would be able to cherish for generations,” states Anna.

Oregon Chapter of Portrait Artists holds First Meeting

The Oregon Chapter of the Portrait Society of America held its first meeting April 10 at the studio of Clarke Berryman, Woodburn. The fourteen members who attended shared samples of their work and spoke of their lives as portrait artists. “It was wonderful to finally meet the people I’ve been emailing and speaking with by phone,” said Jean-Marie Koch,” Ambassador the Oregon. “It was almost like a family reunion!”

Following lunch, the group took turns showing paintings and portfolios and sharing personal stories about how they became interested in painting portraits. Many had the common history of drawing faces as children and dreaming of being an artist. Several spoke of the happiness and excitement of becoming a portrait artist following many years of working at other jobs. While some artists had been fulfilling their dream since childhood, some had started painting portraits as little as nine months ago.

The last part of the afternoon was spent in discussion of what the group wanted to do in the future. Everyone agreed they would meet at least twice a year and have various workshops, portrait demonstrations and programs with special speakers. They also wanted presentations on a variety of subjects including art reproductions, marketing, websites, life-drawing with draping, finding commissions and promoting portraiture in Oregon. One idea that was greeted with great enthusiasm was to organize and hold a portrait art show. The show would feature the works of the Oregon artists and would help to promote portraiture and figurative painting in the northwest. The group will be sharing information on future art festivals and shows as well and marketing and promotional techniques. All agreed that they we excited by the friendships and synergy being created by the organization of the group.

When asked to share their dreams and goals, some spoke of the becoming masters at their art and the desire to support themselves as highly successful artists. Others said they simply wished to continue to create beauty and enjoy their lives as artists. All of the artists expressed a deep love and appreciation for the gift of creating portraits. Two of the artists will be attending the conference in DC.

The next meeting of the Oregon Chapter is planned for October, at a place yet to be determined.
